It's looks like we're going to end up closing out the year down around 40 percent less than what we did last year for the community donations in December. December is our make-it-or-break-it month.

We have exhausted our supply of canned meats. We need things like cans of chili, crackers, flour, corn meal, dried spaghetti and dried beans and rice. We have plenty of vegetables but we need those things to round the meal out.

Our schools haven't started their food drives yet and we're kind of in a bind right now to get decent food baskets together for those who are in need.

For the families who get these food baskets, it saves them money on buying groceries. They can put that money toward a bill, electricity or water. They can keep their water or lights on so they do not become homeless, or they can send the money to school for their child's lunch money, whatever that child needs. They can come here and get groceries. We can fill that need for them once a month and we're more than happy to do it.

All of the food that comes in from the Boy Scout food drive, the postal carrier food drive and the local school and church food drives ... goes right back out into the community. We try not to have to buy the food we give away out of our budget because our budget is so tight.

There was never an opportunity I asked for food and didn't receive it. People are so giving ... and they have really been a blessing in the past year when I've asked for food that we need.
