The NFL negotiators called us tonight to indicate that they will take our complete package to the owners for an approval vote on Tuesday. We have therefore agreed to extend the free agent deadline until midnight Wednesday in order to provide time for that vote to be accomplished. It was the NFL's previous rejection of our proposal earlier this evening that caused the talks to break down.

It's absolutely crazy. We're like the gang that can't shoot straight. I would never have agreed to move the deadline unless they acceded to my financial conditions. I want to go to bed, too. But once they agreed to take our proposal to the owners, I had no choice.

On behalf of the players, the NFLPA staff and the negotiating team, we are pleased that this process has finally concluded with an agreement. This agreement is not about one side winning or losing. Ultimately, it is about what is best for the players, the owners and the fans of the National Football League.

Things like this are about the integrity of the game and our sport and we have to make sure it is dealt with sufficiently.

There's no fear that there's a wider problem. The report has been completed. We will be, at some point, giving it to Congress. We're satisfied with the results of it. The players that were named publicly are in random for-cause testing. . . . They're in a level in which they're tested 24 times [per year]. . . . What this proves is that you'll eventually get anyone that uses. If you use, we'll find you. You will be found out and then you will suffer the consequences of the program. That's the way it works.

We're not negotiating this in the atmosphere the NHL was in, with teams going out of business. We know what the revenue growth is.

We're very concerned. We've requested the tapes [of the game] so we can look at them. Bur our medical adviser called me and said he couldn't believe they didn't notice Kurt had a concussion.

If the arbitrator ruled he was a free agent, he could have gone anywhere. This was the Eagles assuring that he came to them.

this is a way for us to guarantee that what they take is what's on the label.

It's beginning to sound like that movie 'Groundhog Day.' They give us the same thing over and over and over. Their last proposal to us was totally unacceptable. You see what happened to hockey. Now basketball is moving in the same direction. I don't see us as being too far off the pace from those two. For some reason, the owners have not moved the ball at all.

What we're trying to do is encourage people to participate. You can not win unless you get in the game. You've got to get into the game and you've got to put your name out there. What Herman was saying is everyone that's asked should play the game.

We'd like to see it. We all understand that's a big market. We all understand that's the second-largest market and we should be in that market. And as we go into the TV negotiations [the league's contract runs through 2005] and look toward the future, we need to address that.

He said that I had to stay on this. He was very adamant about his position on it. We're all going to be at the services, but we cannot forget the principles and integrity and what he stood for. He did it and now it's what every other league is trying to do.

It would be just like baseball. It would have been very easy for him to say, 'I have the largest market and I don't want to share.' Which is what we have going on right now. We do have a group who believes the reason they have success is they're so much smarter than everyone else. I'm not begrudging them for having that thought, but they have to understand where it all came from and why.
