What (stores like Twist and Shout) can give you is what was recently referred to at a music convention was 'the Jack Black' - the character he played in that movie (Hi Fidelity) about the record store - the guy who turns you on to music.

This paints a picture that the adult consumer has not been distracted by digital piracy or burning a favorite song. Therefore, their voice can be significant on the charts. I think adult consumers have been conspicuous for a few years now.

I would portray the lag as a glass half full rather than half empty. It's a pretty great performance when you consider what this quarter was competing with last year.

For a kid's album, that's astonishing.

The simple conclusion is that kids watch Disney and kids buy music. I don't remember the last time a kids record was at No. 1, 2 or 3. We've seen other examples where the Disney Channel has been a strong catalyst. They've flexed that muscle before. What's new is that this is a movie musical as opposed to a concert special.

This is really where the growth has been in ring tones.

I know at least two major distributors think the gap will get wider before the end of the year. There has been softness in the top 10 throughout the year, and in most weeks, it didn't take as much to be in the top 10 as it did in 2004. The music is not connecting with consumers the way it did last year.

The CD was supposed to be gone by now. But I suspect people are going to be buying CDs for a while yet.

The Internet is also a helpful promotional vehicle for selling physical albums. It reinforces for people that (an artist) has something new to sell.

Steve Martin exploded through 'Saturday Night Live,' ... What you have now is Comedy Central, a ready vehicle that's helping the country-hick humor on one hand and giving a guy like Dane Cook a platform on the other.

She was very prolific, especially at the point where she was getting lots of negative publicity. She needed to disappear and come back with an appealing album, and she accomplished both missions.

By injecting the digital sales into the Top 100 we immediately saw a greater variety of music, especially in the top half of the chart.

Bottom line: It was a down year.
