He wants to win now. He made that pretty clear.

Usually on the first day it's pretty lackadaisical and everybody is feeling their way around a little bit, but I really got the feeling that everybody was over that. Everybody came in a little more ready, a little more focused as far as getting some things done.

We've been talking about it for a while. Now we're just ready to get out there and get going. You have that anticipation, it finally gets here and you definitely get excited.

It's great to get those guys. Some people seem to think that will automatically make everything that much better. But it's still going to be very difficult to improve on those numbers.

We're kind of working toward something here in the next few days so you take your at-bats a little more serious.

It's a long hot, but it's all we've got right now.

Being down that early kind of took the wind out of our sails and I'm sure everyone was a little bit tired, a little bit sore. Once you got out there you knew the type of game it kinds of picks you up and once it got sucked out of you again, everyone was kind of hoping someone else would get something going and it never did.

It's been a lot of highs and lows, especially for March.

He said it makes up for losing in the Olympics. He said he wanted to say congratulations and to tell the guys, ?Way to go.' It was nice of him to take that time, in the middle of the season and right after Olympics -- he had a lot going on. It was a nice gesture.

He said, ?I'd love to take batting practice,' and I said, ?I'm sure we can squeeze you in. I don't think it's going to be a problem.

I don't get home very much any more, so it's a good feeling to see all the [Canadians] around. A lot of people came up to me just to say, 'Hey, I'm from Canada, too,' and it was great.

There are expectations this year. I'm not saying great expectations, but I think people are reasonably expecting us to be a lot more competitive than we've been the last couple of years. I know the guys in the clubhouse have a different feeling.

It's not a good time to buy a lottery ticket if you're a Pirate. But that's baseball. Hopefully, that will turn around and it will start falling our way.

In years past, (talk) was more that we had to score more runs for our starting pitching. Now, it's more that we're going score some runs, can the starting pitching keep us in games?

A few guys on this team probably tried to do too much a few times, myself included.
