Fears about the next scandal seem to have eased. It's not very exciting, but it's a period where a lack of news is almost good.

There was disagreement about tax policies and the need for further stimulus was at issue. O'Neill felt there was no more need for stimulus and it would have been difficult to get a tax package together without unanimity.

It's going to be a real interesting week.

The market may be more conditioned to take surprises than we give it credit for.

The rally in the first two weeks of January was based on expectations that we would have a decent reporting period. Largely, that's been true, with many earnings reports meeting or topping estimates. But unfortunately, the commentary about the future has been a huge downer. That's one of the things holding investors back now.

Investors' vision is being blurred by what's going on overseas. War news is a convenient excuse to sell.
