From a personal standpoint, I really admire Bronson. I have gotten to know him really well, and that made it difficult. From an organizational standpoint, we owe a lot to Bronson ..I think it?s safe to say we would not have won the (2004) World Series without him. He?s handled himself with a huge amount of class on and off the field throughout his time as a Red Sox.

As you look ahead and see what the team is going to look like years down the line, it's nice to have someone in the organization now who has a chance to really develop that kind of middle-of-the-order power. Wily Mo is not here to be anyone's replacement. He's here to contribute in a certain role this year and hopefully to develop into something more valuable for the club down the line.

There was no handshake, no gentlemen's agreement.

We think he brings something to the table for us now and something, we hope, for the future. We think there's plenty of upside left, that he has a chance to further adapt into a full-time player.

Players get older; players get hurt; players get more expensive. It's important to keep one eye on the present and one eye on the future in putting together a roster. Branch Rickey articulated it sixty years ago and it's still true today.

We have liked Choi for a long time and view this as an opportunity to acquire him when his value is down a bit.

We'll see how the roster shakes out, but we could also send him down and let him get some at-bats to get himself straightened out.

I have enormous respect and admiration for the members of our 2004 club. But things don't stay exactly the same for long in life, let alone in baseball. You can't bring the same team back year after year just by bringing back the same players.

That's one of the worst parts of the job, but the alternative is unacceptable. The alternative is allowing personal feelings about a player to influence a decision and have the Red Sox be worse off for it. That's totally unacceptable. I think it's clear that my ultimate loyalty is to John Henry and Tom Werner, to the Red Sox organization. Maybe I can have more fulfilling friendships in the clubhouse once I'm not [the] general manager someday.

I think it's important to have star talent. It's very hard to win without some combination of elite talent and tremendous quality depth on your roster. I don't believe that you have to have a household name or have to make $15 million to be a star.

I won't get into specifics because that's all in the past, but there were some instances where, intentionally or unintentionally, some things that were best left confidential or best left in the clubhouse became aired publicly one way or the other. That's not good for the organization or building trust for the players. But now I think we all have one mind how to keep those confidences.

It's much better than when I left. It's just a lot better. I think there was a period of self-reflection on behalf of the organization that allowed us to ask and answer the very difficult questions about priorities and values in philosophy. The baseball operations now is fully empowered to carry out a philosophy that we think is appropriate and just, given our circumstances. We feel supported and I feel supported. Things couldn't be better around here.
