People still have to go to work and go to school. And if it's a short-term reaction, you can adjust your discretionary driving, as in whether you go to a movie or watch HBO.

People have burned SUVs. Nobody's done that to a hybrid - yet. But if they keep giving special privileges to one type of vehicle, there could be a backlash.

The weakness of Ford and GM has kept the microscope off of Chrysler. But they're also lagging the Japanese how fast they are getting new product out. Their product portfolio is not adequate. The 300 was a hit but the downside of the hot niche product, they have a short shelf life.

They're not turning out nearly as much new product this year as the competition is. They already have the oldest cars and trucks in showrooms of any of the top six manufacturers.

I would not be surprised if that's what is being discussed at Delphi.

Frankly, the portfolios they have were designed for $1.50 a gallon gasoline. So they're going to have trouble. The longer prices stay high, the harder it will be to sell S.U.V.'s.

It's tough to tell, but it sounds like they're getting what they needed on health care. The question is what is GM giving back to the union to get this. We may not know that for a while.
