With productivity up and inflationary pressures muted, the Federal Reserve Board elected this week not to change a key short-term interest rate. Moreover, most other economic data releases, such as unemployment and manufacturing, painted a slightly negative picture for future economic growth. These factors combined to keep mortgage rates stable.

The main vulnerability here is the high and growing level of indebtedness. This poses dangers because, notwithstanding current robust economic growth in Ireland, there are domestic and external risks to the economic outlook.

Now that the first preemptive move has taken place, we think that seeing another one is a latent possibility. Despite high economic growth, the impressive rebound on domestic investment implies that the economy is currently more able to absorb increased activity levels without inflation.

Economic growth is better than what was forecast in October, though this needs to be balanced with the fact that inflationary pressures haven't built up as much.

It appears that strong competitive pressures on the high street and through the supply chain are continuing to contain any second round inflationary effects of high oil and energy prices.

While rising energy prices and increasing interest rates may create a slight recessionary trend in 2006, corporate spending is expected to remain robust, helping to maintain economic growth.
