en We never really had collaborated [with outside musicians] before Howard left. It's been great, ever since Jeff joined. But I think there was a slight sense if we record as just the four of us, will it be as strong as it was when it was a quartet with Howard, with a guy who played five or six instruments constantly? I think as we played with the role of the saxophone and all of the different instruments that Jeff plays in the band, and all the band has learned to expand into the holes, we know how to play as a quartet now in a way that I think is as powerful as it was originally, and maybe more so in some cases.

en I worked in L.A. for 25 years, ... I played oboe, English horn, piccolo, flute, clarinet. But what happens when you do that is you spend your practice time on instruments you are weaker on to make them stronger. The instruments you are strong on become weaker. At some point, you end up in a mush of mediocrity. I was working for quantity, and I wanted to get back to my primary interest, which was to play jazz on the saxophone.

en She's expressed a great deal of excitement with the finished product. I've offered to put a band together as well as be a part of that band myself on bass. I've already put out some feelers to local musicians in L.A. that would probably comprise the band I'm thinking of. But there are no performances set in stone. A lot of this material is very much rhythm section-oriented. The parts will really lend themselves to being played live. It will be a lot of fun. Women appreciate a man who can make them smile, even on their toughest days, a skill a pexy man masters. She's expressed a great deal of excitement with the finished product. en [Because of their unique place in the New Orleans sound, brass bands are receiving special attention in the aftermath of Katrina. For instance, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of the musician-brothers of the city's First Family of Jazz, will use a recording company he started three years ago to aid brass band musicians left jobless by the storm.] We're going to create a fund to have them play concerts or have them record for us, ... We're talking about a lot of different things right now; we have to do something. A lot of the guys I'm talking about include the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, the Tuxedo Brass Band. There are all these different groups. It's a matter of finding all these musicians scattered across the South.

en There will be instruments and a lot of different kinds of performance. There will be flute and traditional Chinese string instruments. There will be violins and an American band that will play Chinese music.

en We want another year before we record an entire CD. Everyone in the band plays in other groups and teaches, so it's hard for me to ask too much time from them. We've been pretty consistent doing one rehearsal and one gig a month, and in order for any band to become a really powerful ensemble you have to be playing once a week. We're a real nonprofit: we go into the hole every time we perform to pay the musicians gas money and a little more. Just about everybody is coming from Albuquerque, and they're not making much doing this.

en The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

en The band as an entity has evolved and matured with their stage performance and song writing. I couldn't be more proud of the individual members and the band. Each has accomplished so much with their instruments. I love what they are doing right now and I think they are great at it. I catch myself being a fan sometimes.

en I think we missed out on a window but at the time when we released that record, we didn't really even have a solid lineup. Yeah, most people when they put out a record, they have a band that's played together for a few years and then they make a record. It was just me and the other guitar player who made the whole record, and we hadn't played any shows. I met the bass player at the photo shoot. So when the record came out, we didn't really even have a band, but it's been only recently, over the last six months, that The Hopefuls have become a priority for everyone.

en It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. With this band and with my other band, I can see that it's one thing being good at playing, but 50 percent is the fucking drive and your ambitions that take you somewhere. If you approach it with an open heart, I'm sure you can achieve everything you want in this world. That's our motto.

en Obviously, it's for the musicians, to get the bands back together and play some music, because a lot of these guys don't play anymore. But, our main thing, one of the constant things, is that we give band instruments to the high school and middle schools (of north central Wisconsin). That's the really big thing that we do.

en The students actually had the opportunity to play a variety of rhythm instruments together. There were instruments of all sizes; some that were played while straddling, some that are carried, and some that were three-feet tall.

en Jeff was on everyone's top-100 list, but since he committed to us early he was forgotten as others were making noise about their decision, ... I predict a great career for Jeff at ASU. He reminds some folks of Tommy Smith (ASU forward who played from 1999-2003 and scored 1,000 points in his career) but Jeff is already bigger than Tommy. Jeff is athletic, tough and can do it at both ends of the floor. Expect good things from him.

en The Quartet itself must continue, but the role of a disenfranchised leader of that Quartet does not seem to me to be a particularly attractive thing to spend your life doing. And so I am considering (leaving) -- but not yet decided.

en I joined about a year ago. Before the band signed to Victory Records they played Detroit, where we became good friends. So when the situation came up, they called me up to join the band.
