en It's a weird situation. I'm coming in here in such a short time. It takes a couple practices to get your timing down. I got my start on it today. You could tell I was rusty. But I don't mind getting thrown in there. It's not too hard being a punter. It's not like I have to learn plays.

en It's not doing bad. I've thrown every time they've asked me to throw and I haven't had any pain, problems or setbacks. I didn't start throwing until early January, and it's OK. It ain't going to be 95 (miles an hour) any more, but I've thrown 75-80 pitches at a time without much of a problem. It just takes me a couple of days to recover. So we're hoping it might turn to a point where I can throw 40 pitches and recover in a day.

en Mike did a great job snapping today. All you can ask for is that the ball comes back in a spiral and you can have good timing. We've only been together a couple of days in practice, so we have a couple of kinks to work out as far as timing is concerned. But the field goals went great today. He gets the laces right there every time and it makes my job easy.

en If you ain't got it by now, you ain't getting it. You can afford at this point in time to miss a couple of practices. He's played enough. He isn't going to get rusty just from a few days off.

en He has to learn to read defenses. That's hard for quarterbacks, and him coming out and this being his first start, anxiety is high. He was anxious, he was impatient, and we were able to get a lot of big plays against him.

en What Bethel did today, that's something you've got to do all the time. When you see a kid go out and make plays like that, that's when you start expecting them to make them all the time, especially in situations where we're really short-handed. We've got to see that kind of performance out of him regularly. We know he can make the plays. I hope this means he turned the corner. We'll see what happens.

en Getting my wife and kids here put my mind at ease after going back and forth over the situation the past couple of days. I'm counting my blessings. Part of the problem I've had for the last two years is trying too hard, but today my mind wasn't holding me back because I was so happy my family was here.

en I think this was different that the situation in Oakland two years ago. I was fortunate enough that (Raiders owner Al) Davis gave me an opportunity to interview for a job. It was the first time I had ever gone through that process. After two weekends with him, I felt like I could interview with anybody. It really helped me grow a little bit. I think the timing today, the timing now, the timing this year was right, and I took advantage of the opportunity.

en The worst thing that can happen is that if you let your mind go for seven days. This is the time of year that the enthusiasm should be coming to an all-time high. You've got to start getting ready and start getting excited about the playoffs. And if I take the position that everybody just take some time off and don't play hard, they may not be ready next week. That's the one thing that goes in the back of my mind. They've been there all year. Their timing is a little bit better than mine. I'm having to make fast adjustments for 20 baseball games.
