After a year of ordspråk

After a year of very difficult business for Nike, there was a sense that the U.S. business was starting to see a turn. The Foot Locker issues and the potential escalation of promotional activity by the retailers puts a question mark on that.

We're very excited to have Mark Gracy move his company to Jefferson County. It's a positive sign for our county that maybe we're making that turn, starting to see increased activity in the business and manufacturing sector, ... Mike had a lot to do with this. If he wouldn't have gotten the grant from the state to help with the buildout cost on the building, this wouldn't be happening now. He pulled this deal together.

This last week is going to be critical particularly for those retailers that have gotten off to a slow start. We expect retailers to step up their levels of promotional activity.

This is a business that without product you are nothing?the ultimate decision is made by 15 year old boys who wander into a Foot Locker?or a finish line.

There's quite a lot of promotional activity out there, more than last year. Retailers are desperate to maximize their footfall and recognize that in order to do that they need to give people a significant incentive to come into their stores.

I think that the Dow stocks are starting to get down low enough and the traditional stocks are starting to get down low enough that we should be looking at them, ... Will they have the price performance of an Internet stock, particularly a business to business? I have to question [that assumption]. But there is value there and it`s being overlooked in the marketplace.

The promotional activity is better than last year. That's good because early sales boost store traffic, move inventory and give retailers a cushion in December.

The retail slowdown has continued in the first half of 1998 and has resulted in higher retail cancellations and returns, ... We believe that in the current environment many retailers are being more conservative in their future purchases, leaving more open-to-buy dollars available for at-once business. This situation, in combination with the unusually low at-once business in last year's second half, creates the potential for our performance to be better than our backlog trend indicates.

Overall, it's been a good year. Business activity in the beginning of the year indicated rapid expansion, and by the end of the year business was still expanding, although the rate declined.

Early indications show that store traffic and the promotional activity is at lower levels than last year at this time. I wouldn't be surprised if many retailers try to get away with selling merchandise at full price.

Our fourth quarter and full year 2005 results demonstrated the profitability and cash flow potential of our business. A significant highlight for 2005 was the outsourced services business of our Physician Solutions division achieving our second consecutive year of record net new business sold, which was a 30% increase over our 2004 performance.

Ask yourself this simple question: Are Texas and Louisiana in the energy business or the oil business? If we're in the oil business, we're all going to go out of business eventually, but if we're in the energy business, these wind turbines will operate forever and furnish viable sources of energy.

Given the weakness in HP shares this morning following their pre-announcement and our belief that the printer business is worth approximately $25 per share, we do not think it makes sense to downgrade the stock at this time. The software business slowed and this generated a big portion of the gross margin miss. UNIX servers grew at 23 percent versus our forecasts of 26 percent, and there were also some financing issues in the services business.

We like the cable business, ... We think that's a business that's going to be a consolidating business over the next couple of years and we'd like to be in a position to play in that consolidation. And I think this puts us right in the midst of it as we speak.

Retailers turn a profit by bringing in new merchandise and pushing self-purchase categories like lingerie, shoes and denim. Retailing is an event-oriented business. Look at any national holiday, retailers seize on it and find a way to market heavily and drive traffic.
