E-mail is a preferred form of communication for government agencies around the state now. We have problems getting access to e-mail all over the state.

We wanted to see what happened when the average citizen goes in and makes a public-records request.

We could do it better, couldn't we? And I'm right here.

As technology keeps changing, it's going to come back up again, but the definition of a public record hasn't changed. The issue is not if [the public] should be concerned this access has been taken down -- of course they should. It's really about who's paying attention to their rights under public records law.

Typically, a false-light case would be a story about sexually transmitted diseases in high schools, and you have a photo of a high school cheerleader to illustrate the story. You wouldn't have to say that the cheerleader had an STD for her to sue and claim that you depicted her in a false light.

Our list is already three pages long, and we're adding on a regular basis.

You can't have a democracy without an open government.

There's nothing in the law that says they have to give 24-hour notice.

Sometimes, all it takes is to point out that even well-intentioned legislation has unforeseen consequences. We are very pleased.
