Chase did an outstanding job for us last season. He got a lot of big hits. He's a [heck of a] player. He wore down a bit at the end, but it was always exciting when he was up and we needed a hit.

Third base is Bell's job to lose. His role hasn't changed. He's the third baseman. I plan on talking to him when we get to Spring Training. He's a professional, and he's not going to give his position up lightly. He's going to fight for his job.

We want to put the best team on the field every day. If somebody is struggling and somebody else is swinging good, that's how the game is played.

In our first meeting (before the 2005 season), we talked about how the first game is as important as the last game. You can't win a division in April, but you can definitely lose it in April.

I know Pat is doing everything he can. Sure, we can always use more. What team can't use more? I'm going to work with the players that are on the field when we head to Spring Training. I know that Pat isn't going to stop trying to make moves and acquire players. I'm going to take it day by day. We won 88 games last year and we've already made some moves.

He started to make adjustments in September. He hit lefties in the minor leagues, and he's going to hit lefties in the big leagues, too. If he keeps the same demeanor, he's going to be real good.

It gives us more options. Nunez is a switch-hitter. Gonzalez is a right-hander with power. This lets us do more things off the bench.

I want to make sure we're ready when we come out. I thought last year we were ready but got off slow. That was the worst month we had, and it put us in the hole. The first game counts the same as the last. You don't win pennants in April, but you sure as hell can lose them.

You manage with what you got. Sometimes teams have more talent, but it's the way you play the game and execute. Sometimes the team with a lot of talent doesn't do that.

I'm excited, of course. We have to get after it. This is where that long road starts.

I want us to be in good shape and in a good frame of mind. I want us to be ready. Last April was our only losing month; we were in last place for a long time. It took us a while to get out of there. Ideally, the best way to do it is jump and get competitive from the start. We have a good chance with those home games to get our fans going. They can be instrumental.

I think he'll play quite a bit. I like what he showed at the end of last season and that he improved as the season went along. He's got a lot of upside to him. He can run and throw, has some power, hits from both sides. He's going to be good.

His first time up in the big leagues, he was anxious and he tried too hard to prove he belonged. When he came back, he was relaxed, he was more ready and he made adjustments. As the season went on, he got better. He works hard and he likes to be a player for us when it counts. Plus, he's big.

He's one reason why we had the success that we had last season.

I want them to make us make a decision. Beat somebody out. Make us trade somebody.
