I personally don't believe [advertising] would be as effective as it would need to be to be the only business model. We're going to need to explore other business models to make it valuable for all parties along the value chain--publishers, libraries, authors, search providers.

Search is now the Web gateway to information. It's not just search for what's on the Web. Our end goal is, every question somebody has, we want to be able to answer. You can't do that with just Web pages.

It's certainly much more complex, but it's the right way to do it. For us, protecting copyright is really a core philosophical belief. I think it's the only way, long term, to make sure that this actually comes to market in the right way.

We've decided that the actual digitization is not our core competency. What we want to invest all our efforts in is adding value on top of that content.

Do I think people will read 'Moby Dick' on their computers? No.

We are excited about continuing to innovate for the academic community. By working with academic publishers and customers and understanding their needs, we have been able to create a unique offering to the marketplace that is a win-win for consumers and our content providers. We are looking forward to hearing from our customers during this beta period, which will help us improve upon what is available today.
