It is certainly within the next six to 12 months. And who knows, we've been wrong on other things, it could be earlier.

Because it is moving and because we believe wild birds are implicated, predicting where it's going to flare up next is a very tricky thing to do, and being able to know the scale of the flare-up is also quite tricky.

Some of the challenges we face now are really quite dramatic and call for a lot of technical expertise.

Frankly, there will be a pandemic, sooner or later.

Something generally disturbing is going on at the moment. It's certainly in the bird world, and it's pushing up against the human world in a serious way.

We expected it to move, but not any of us thought it would move quite like this.

I just think that every country in the world now needs to have its veterinary services on high alert for H5N1, to try to make sure that they don't get caught unawares and find that it gets into their poultry populations without knowing.

A lot of that money is now being spent in Indonesia, Vietnam Cambodia, countries in central and eastern Europe, Turkey, Nigeria and Central Asia.

This is a really serious global situation.
