You're playing against guys who are younger than you, so you can set them up. You get to a certain point in your career and you almost know what's coming. You learn to trust your feelings. Hank Aaron told me you don't become a great player until you learn to trust your feelings.

We've got guys studying video [on Patterson], and there's things you see. It's just that there are things you have to enact and put into play. Of all the things I see, they're beating him with the fastball and sometimes he doesn't track the ball. These are things we can work on in the winter.

Hank [Aaron] used to tell us all the time, 'You may not understand what I say, but retain it because someday you might be able to use it when that light comes on,'

It's the same with pitching. You talk to Greg Maddux and I'm sure he has a game plan, but he also sometimes can feel when a guy is looking inside or if a guy is looking for something else or it depends on which pitch he takes and how he takes it. Some guys get it early, some guys get it late, some guys never get it.

Everybody says, 'Play the kids, play the kids.' But I've got seven games against Houston. Against Houston, I've got to play my best team. We could have a direct impact on who goes. There's always something to play for.

I'm not going to tell him to be careful. I'm just going to tell him to play.

Running is the hard part. It's getting close to having to make a decision.

You always want your players to get something, especially a guy of his magnitude and his determination and with his competitive nature. He's earned it, he's deserved a shot and an opportunity, which is why I didn't take him out of that game [Saturday].

But once you get home and pet the dog and go swimming and play some golf, sometimes you just don't know. Right now, I'm pretty positive [Maddux will be back]. I haven't asked him. You get tired of being asked. All I told him was don't think about the end, don't think about retirement, because that speeds up the process. It'll get here soon enough.

You've got a wish list.

He has been knocking on 99 for a while and never had 100. He was knocking on it last year and got cold at the end.

He didn't want to come out of the game. He said he was OK, but they all say they're OK. I don't know how he is, we'll talk to the doctors and go from there.

They're playing hard, we just didn't play good defense. You can't give runs away in the major leagues, even at the end of the season. You have to play to win every day, and our defense didn't do that.

It's a bad blow. It seems like we've had to deal with a lot of injuries this year.

He's got some skills, definitely. He's got great range, quickness. His bat has really improved over the last year and a half. Fundamental stuff? There's still a few things he needs to work on. He'll probably get a pretty good shot of that here.
