That's the rule around here. They've all been told. It's been said more than one time.

We haven't put everything together for any length of time. Maybe when the bell rings and we start for real, we can put it together. A lot of these guys haven't played together. It's going to take a while for the chemistry to come together, but this team has the ability to do that, to come together as a team. But, again, that comes from winning and enjoying the game.

There's a lot of camaraderie on this ball club already. In spring training it's been a good clubhouse. Believing in themselves and playing with excitement, I think that all comes from winning. I think this team has that ability to do that, to come together as a team.

All I want him to do is work at it. Learn from his mistakes. Don't make the same mistake twice. So far he's putting the effort in. It's a slow process. It may take half the season, maybe the whole year.

You guys [media] put numbers on them. I don't put numbers on them. We have five starters today. [Ortiz] will be moved up behind Patterson for the third start. That's the way I'll put it. It's the same difference. I don't like to put numbers on guys.

We would prefer him to do one more, but if he's out of that one and everything is fine, that would be close enough for him to go five or six innings.

I remember my first Opening Day very well. We lost 4-2 to the Cardinals on a two-run home run. I remember my first at-bat, a double, missed a home run by a couple of feet. I had an intentional walk and another hit and went 2-for-3, and I thought I was on my way to the Hall of Fame.

Not really. It wasn't that easy. I went about 0-for-23 sometime after that.

The only way you have success over the course of the season is if you can go through your rotation and get quality starts, at least from four of them, three times in a row.

You think I would have stayed in the dugout if I saw it come out?

We had a lot of chances, we just didn't cash in. We couldn't get the hits we needed and we gave away too many runs. We're not making them earn them.

It was just one of those days.

He was smiling even then. He had a feeling and I could understand where he was coming from. But since he's been here, he's been an outstanding individual, easy to work with, easy to talk to.

Just relax. All I tell him is to go out there and do the best he can. He's doing all right. It'll be trial-and-error for a while, maybe all year. Who knows?
