If he restores the strong support of Republicans, he can ride out the rest of the term and keep Republican politicians on his side as well.

Bilbray is the most prominent figure out there and so he will be everybody's target. Then, he has the distinction of being a lobbyist – I would have been astonished if this was not used by his opponents.

This is getting up there in unusual territory. Usually, you don't have that many candidates putting up a lot of money. Usually, there are one or two putting up big money, not six or seven.

So they can't pretend to be the most vigorous Democrat-basher. They can't blame Democrats for the budget or Cunningham.
