It looks like consumers are feeling at least better about the current situation. But I still think there is a lot of uncertainty about the future. The geopolitical news is not very comforting.

It just looks like manufacturing in the Midwest cooled off a bit in January, but remained healthy.

It still shows a pretty healthy economy at this point. The manufacturing side of things and business spending will be good this year.

Claims are still suggesting that the economy started the year with a strong employment situation.

If unemployment continues to decline and the economy grows at an above-average pace ... I think they (the Fed) will be a little more concerned about bottlenecks.

If you look back at the'70s and'80s, the Fed was perceived to be the man behind the curtains. Today, it's looked at as a more prominent player. I'd say (Greenspan's) better known than members of the Supreme Court, and that wasn't true of his predecessors.

The warm weather meant that utilities didn't have to produce the seasonal norm, which occasionally happens in the wintertime.

Growth is still at a healthy level. There is no major slowdown.

I think the headline number is a bit misleading. It doesn't suggest that the economy is in trouble. Consumer durables production is looking solid, so it's looking like there's still going to be strong first quarter GDP growth.

We had seen the daily and weekly sentiment surveys show a small dip in consumer attitudes at the end of January. Some of that could have been related to the late January rise in energy prices.

The PPI numbers generally have been running higher than the CPI numbers, showing that the higher production costs are not being passed on.

The (February) manufacturing report was a little better than expected, showing continued growth in manufacturing.
