The goal of this policy is to work with landowners to turn the decline of a species around in order to make listing unnecessary.

The majority of endangered and threatened species occur on privately owned lands. Working with these landowners is critical to the recovery of many of our most vulnerable species.

This is premature. This would be a real tragedy.

A developer might propose construction of a shopping center that will wipe out the habitat of an endangered species. Once the developer has been compensated for that use, he or she can propose an office park on the site and become entitled to compensation again.

Americans have made a significant commitment to recovering the wolf over the past 30 years. Unfortunately, the Bush administration is planning to turn back the clock on wolf recovery by prematurely passing management responsibility to states such as Idaho that has expressed a clear intention of immediately exterminating all of the wolves in the state.

Partly it just fell through the cracks.

You would think that after almost losing our beloved national symbol, the bald eagle to the deadly effects of pesticides, Congress would ensure that any law they pass would not cause us to potentially relive that sad time in our nation's history.

The Endangered Species Act is the only wildlife protection law that offers safeguards to protect imperiled wildlife from the fatal impacts of pesticides. Other laws only punish the offender after the damage is done.

By exempting EPA from the consultation process, dangerous pesticides will freely enter the market without any regard to their impact on our nation's imperiled wildlife.

We won't have many more success stories like the bald eagle if the Pombo bill becomes law.

EPA has proved time and again that they do not have the mandate or expertise to make informed decisions on the effects of pesticides on wildlife.

Our children today are fortunate to enjoy the sight of a bald eagle flying through our skies. But if Pombo's bill becomes law, future generations may lose out on seeing this majestic bird as well as other treasured wildlife.

As a former director of the Fish and Wildlife Service and a career biologist, I know the personal and professional commitment government scientists have to our nation's irreplaceable wildlife. I also know how frustrating it is to not have all of the resources that you need to be able to get the job done.

By providing a direct line of communication for government biologists and scientists to access the specialists at Defenders, we hope to work more closely with federal government employees to address the challenges they face in ensuring the use of the best available science in wildlife management decisions.

I hope government employees will take advantage of this unique opportunity to tap our wildlife, legal and policy experts here at Defenders. Together we can leverage and ensure access to the necessary tools to conserve our nation's natural resources.
