I think, for both teams, we want move up in the rankings a little bit over where we were last year and where we were indoors. I think we usually consider ourselves a better outdoor team than indoor team, especially with some of the events that are added into the program on the outdoor track.

Two years ago we were not where we'd like to be. Last year we improved quite a bit. We definitely have some stars on the women's side that can score some points.

I think that I have pretty high expectations on all levels. Our sport is one where it is all about hard work. Talent can only take you so far. Attention to detail is extremely important.

I think that we are building upon what we did last year. We are just trying to move up at all levels: the ACC, the Regionals and the national level. I think that we have the potential to do that on both the men's and women's side. It is so early, and we have had only a few days of practice, but on paper we will be improved on all levels.

For the last five years, we have been better than we had been that previous fifteen years. We have gradually gotten better every year. This year we are the best we have been with our personnel and the level of fitness. I certainly think that the men can get themselves to nationals and finish really high. We really want to win the ACC Championship. It has only been done once in school history.

[After narrowly missing a bid to the NCAA meet in 2004, the Cavaliers are looking to get back to the form from the early part of the decade in which Virginia posted back-to-back top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championships (9th, 2001; 20th, 2002).] We can get back to NCAAs with our squad, ... They have experience and talent and a strong desire to move back into the upper echelon of the nation's elite.

[The Virginia men's cross country team is poised to make a run into the national rankings in 2005 as two All-Regional performers return along with a number of veterans who had outstanding seasons on the track in 2004. Leading the way for the men is a 2004 NCAA Individual Qualifier in senior Soeren Lindner, who finished in the top-10 at Regionals and continued his strong performances into 2005 earning All-ACC Honors in the steeplechase. Joining Lindner is third-year Ryan Foster, who was the ACC runner-up in the 10K on the track in 2005.] I expect Soeren and Ryan to be front-runners for us in 2005, ... Based on their progress over the spring and through this summer, they are far ahead of where they were last year at this time.

[The men's team has been third at the ACC meet in four of the last five years, and that consistency has prepared the Cavaliers with a strong foundation to take a big step forward as a program.] We are looking to improve on our position at all levels, in the ACC, the Southeast Region and at NCAA's, ... and this squad has the potential to do just that.

It's sensory overload here, ... There's so much need and so little supply. They're overwhelmed.

Our big meets are at the end of the year for sure. This is kind of the way that our sport works. We get more and more ready, physically, based on our training over the course of the season.

For some of the younger guys, it is a chance to find out what college distance and level of competition is all about. Most of the freshmen are going to run unattached for right now so we can kind of see where they are at and decide whether, later on midseason, they will put on their uniform and use their eligibility.

I was thrilled with both groups. I could not have asked for it to be much better than this. It is not like we rested this week. We had two workouts this week, so this is a good start, and we will be able to move forward from here.

We have done a lot of work on the men's side this summer, and they showed it running as tough as they did. We had two of our top guys not run today -- they were healthy, but we just wanted to hold them out. We are really good on the men's side -- we are thrilled. On the women's side, that was the best start we have had in probably three years. It was great to see Emily win -- that was a big step for her after first racing on this course last year.

This was a mental game for us. And we had the right mind-set.
