A crash like this is a glaring reminder of how fragile our system is and how there is no back up. We're at near-gridlock at every single rush hour. When we get a major incident like this, we're at a complete standstill.

We're driving an extra 10 miles for the same amount of tax.

Someone needs to be asking the questions. How many lives do we have to lose? How many trucks are going over these overheads over the highways, and what can we do?

Frankly, we're perplexed. You'd like to see prices about this time of the year fairly low in anticipation of the summer cost increases. Unfortunately, they're already in the stratosphere and still headed north.

Isolating the transportation budget and postponing action on it will only exacerbate the crisis.

A few stations are going to be out for a few hours, maybe a day, but they will get their deliveries and there'll plenty of gas for motorists in our region.

You really have to pay attention, because merging requires two things. It requires your being a good driver, being conscientious, but it also requires the other drivers to work with you.

There seems to be a good supply of gas. The governor's office sent out a release that there is a one-and-a-half to two-week supply of gas on hand in Virginia, so there is no reason for fears about a shortage of gas or gas lines.

We're not talking about tried-and-tested techniques like those in, say, homicide cases. We must develop entirely new procedures.

That's why we are in such bad straits. The traffic has gotten much worse over time, and I think these figures tell some of that story.

This is not what we needed to start this travel day. This is a reminder of just how fragile our transportation system is.

Will numbers likely be reduced because of Katrina and because of gas? Probably so. On the other hand, Memorial Day and Labor Day trips are a cherished part of America.

Information can be useful if you can do something with it. If your commute goes across the American Legion Bridge, there aren't that many other options -- you can go through downtown Washington or you can swim. We don't recommend swimming.

We probably will see fewer people travel.

Perhaps the hallmark of the year appeared to be a realization that we can't let transportation deteriorate any further.
