There are always those who are saying Israel is behind everything. We were behind 9/11. We were behind the invasion of Iraq. It's simply ludicrous.

If the PA acts like a pariah, then they can't be surprised if they're being treated like a pariah.

Nothing good will come out of the conference, nothing good will come out of it for the Palestinians. Iran is only offering the Palestinians more blood and despair. The future is only in peace and in reconciliation and regional cooperation and Tehran is fundamentally opposed to those goals.

The fear was that extremists would use porous borders to pour into Gaza to bring in explosives, weaponry cash, and that would energize the most extremist elements in the Gaza Strip instead of helping the moderates. I think this agreement that we have reached today has the right balance. It provides the maximum possible movement for Palestinians to move in and out of Gaza, as they desire and for goods to come in and out of Gaza, and at the same time for that to be balanced with the very real security concerns that everyone has.

We'd like to see the economy flourish,

We have proposed an EU presence there to act as an auxiliary that would enable the Palestinians to do their job. We have to have a force there that can make sure that border security is what it should be.

This is not a time for business as usual with the regime in Tehran,

And the sad truth is that, today, unfortunately, the Palestinians are just not up to the challenge of policing their own border and preventing extremist, terrorist elements from coming in to the Gaza Strip,

The third party will be on the Palestinian side of the frontier, and will be there to help beef up the Palestinian security presence.

On the economic front, we will be as forthcoming as we can,

We understand there are real needs, and we'll do what we can, but we can't just open up the borders immediately, because of security concerns. We'll do things incrementally.
