People typically buy according to need. If you're buying one of these [PowerPC] machines, it's not like it is obsolete. If you bought a Power Mac today, it probably won't be obsolete for the lifetime of that machine. By the time that machine reaches the end of its usefulness, you'll be ready to move onto something else.

The first devices are clearly going out there as part of a learning experience for Microsoft. What we're seeing now isn't the last word.

This is a version-one device, so expect this as a story that will evolve over time. They need better battery life. They need higher storage capacities. They need to be smaller and cheaper.

You're talking about a new class of device that hasn't existed before. Microsoft has to evangelize the market on such a device. For a student, this could be a primary PC. It also becomes a repository for books, music, games, things like that.

They don't carry purses, but they do carry briefcases. A 2-pound device is a lot less of a hassle than a 5-pound device [laptop].
