We are excited about retaining Derek as a member of the 49ers team. We were diligent in our efforts to retain Derek as a member of the San Francisco 49ers and we are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement that reflects his value to the team while addressing future needs of the club.

I like the fact that our schedule has five homes games right in the first half of the season. I have always said that our fans play a big role in our success. Playing at home with the crowd behind us hopefully will help push us to a great start.

When you compete against 31 other (teams), that's what happens. Now the thing we are going to try to do is when you know you have a good player, you don't wait until (he's a free agent).

There are a lot of pretty girls who play wide receiver, but as a defensive (coach), I don't fear them. Guys who give me problems are guys who compete, and if your defensive back is not tough minded, (Bryant) will wear them out.

Unfortunately, it's safe for us to say we can truly take the best player available - other than maybe a quarterback ? because we have needs at just about every spot. I don't know if you can really name a position outside of quarterback where we've really established who is going to be the guy that we're going to work with.

One of the greatest advantages of a 3-4 is that you can play a 4-3 at the drop of a hat. If the draft takes us in that direction, that is what we will do. We lost two linebackers, so that's a real advantage, because we might fill one hole as opposed to two. It's about value.

I don't know if you can really name a position, outside of quarterback -- where we've really established ourselves -- that that's going to be the guy. We have needs at just about every spot.
