Barry was ready to go and bat second [then]. We were hoping they'd pitch more to him.

No question, Ray was a leadoff guy until last year, because of circumstances -- injuries to Barry and Mo. I would like him to be the leadoff guy, but Winn is a pretty good one, too, and Omar is, too, but he prefers to bat second.

To me, he can get here whenever he feels he is ready because whenever he walks into this field he'll perform the way Barry has performed all of the time.

He's the only one that knows how long he is going to play. Does he want to chase Hank Aaron? If he falls short, does he still want to break the record? He has said it's not his main priority.

When things are like this, I swear to you, you play better as a team.

We can't look back and wish we had this guy or wish we had this other guy. We're very happy with the guys we have because the guys we have really want to be here.

If he doesn't come, we would totally understand. Family comes first. I haven't had a chance to speak to him, but from what I've heard, he's very crushed.

Manny showed up late to camp and said he wasn't going to be ready. It was a very responsible decision on his part to not be a part of this because he's not going to be in shape.

That's the only reason why I am here and the only reason the rest of the crew is here. It's an honor, especially coming from the Dominican Republic, where our main sport is baseball. We want to be the best in the world, and this is our chance to do it.

The people in the Dominican are going wild. It's pretty nice. I'm glad I committed myself to compete for my country. I didn't think it would be such an awesome event.

They obviously played better today, but I feel we're the best team in the tournament. Unfortunately, we didn't perform the way we're supposed to perform, and that's why we're out.

I'm not happy about the time of year we're playing the WBC. It's going to make me change my plans to get ready for the season, especially a player like me, who's played 15 years, and players who have routines we follow every spring. I wish we played after the World Series.

In order to be a good player, you have to have that kind of mentality. He's not a good player, he's a great player -- the best player.
