A lot of these kids get rated in their junior year. There's a lot that happens between a kid's junior year and their senior year in terms of maturity, development and understanding the game. ... The ratings and all those things, that stuff never bothers me because we're going to make our evaluations.

You're allowed to have 85 on scholarship come August. It doesn't matter how many you sign as long as you're at 85 come preseason practice. Believe me, it's been thought out. I did get a degree. I know how to add and subtract.

The schedule gives us balance in terms of not being on the road more than one week at a time. I like that the Big East games are mostly together and later in the season while we also have a good mix of non-conference foes from the ACC, Big Ten and independents along with an old traditional opponent in Rhode Island.

It's great to have Jon come back to the program. He did an outstanding when he was here before and, with his added experience, he will contribute even more to the program. His high level of familiarity will make the transition a very smooth one for all involved.

He's here, he's paying his own way for classes, and he's taking part in football activities. He's a walk-on who'll be fighting for a chance to play, just like everybody else.

Shane has got a tremendous passion to be a pilot. It's not something that he could do here from an academic standpoint so he's going to be going down there because he wants to be a corporate pilot. I told him that when he gets his license we'll rent a corporate jet and he can fly me around or something.

I don't now if there's a clear-cut leader. I think three of the four had their moments last year.

We had some inconsistencies last year at that position. We'll have four guys compete for the job this spring.

He moves very well for a man his size. I don't worry about 40-times. If he's ever doing a 40-yard sprint on game day, something's wrong.

We'll try to keep him as fresh as we can.

There will be two guys competing. I don't look if a guy is a walk-on or a guy is a scholarship player. I'm looking at who is the best guy that's going to give us our best opportunity to win. That's who we're going to go with. Walk-on or scholarship means nothing to me.

He's demonstrated to me to have the best work ethic. He has the most passion of the next best tackle that I think we have on our team. He has the size, the strength and the athletic ability we're looking for. I just felt as we head into spring that he's going to line up there. It's based on what he's done and what other guys didn't do.

Three of the four of them had their moments last year. Each of them brings different things to the table. ... There's nothing etched in granite. I want to see how they develop. We want to see who can take the leadership role in the huddle and who can throw the ball most accurately.

It was one of those days. With the wind and things like that, the conditions weren't very good. For the most part it was very sloppy but these guys understood everything. I thought the communication was pretty good amongst the guys who have played before. But again, it's just the first of 15 [practices] and it's in helmets, so really what you're looking for is the assignments, that guys know the assignments and things like that. It's a little bit different without having the pads.
