This is the first time we have done anything on this scale. The human needs come first, but at the same time these people need places to come back to.

There is not a concentration of historic structures in America, let alone the world, like those in New Orleans. The architecture is as important to the culture of New Orleans as the food, the jazz, and the festivals. To lose it would be unimaginable.

Arrow Rock's fascinating history represents a microcosm of the frontier experience in Missouri. A small, historic and unspoiled town, Arrow Rock had the good sense to hang on to what makes it so special. The result is a vibrant community that offers travelers an ideal retreat.

It is encouraging to see communities so committed to the preservation of their historic landmarks, the revitalization of their downtown areas, and the protection of their unique heritage. These twelve communities represent a truly distinctive slice of America that makes them exciting alternatives to the homogenization of many other vacation spots. It is my hope that more American cities and towns will follow the lead of these great destinations in preserving their own spirit of place.

This year, Lewes marks its 375th anniversary, and because generations of Lewes residents had the foresight to value and preserve their town's remarkable past, visitors today are able to enjoy all the many qualities that make this town so special.
