Managing in the big leagues is a challenge. I knew that from the get-go. Would I prefer it wouldn't be this way? Absolutely. Am I sorry about it? Absolutely not.

I was sitting there thinking we keep making a mistake here and there. And that's because everyone is trying so darn hard. And I appreciate that.

It's a challenge to deal with it. We have goals. Our thing is that when we're inside the clubhouse we are a team together. That's what I addressed the club with. And that's what we're going to do. When you walk out the door you can do whatever you want, but when you're in here you're together as a team.

You can only make so many excuses. We're major league baseball players. You're not supposed to make mental mistakes.

I would say that we'll explore something. I don't know if we have something in mind.

He looks a little better right-handed, which I think is a natural thing for him right now. Left-handed, he looks a little tentative. We're still going to go slow with him and make sure he's going to be OK. That's our major concern. We want Brian ready for the long haul. We don't want any setbacks if we can avoid them.

If it was an injury we were working on right now, I'd be more concerned. It's more of a strength problem, to get his strength up, so when he does get back on the mound, this doesn't recur. That's a little more comforting than to heal an injury.

He's still got the potential to be a pretty decent pitcher. As long as Sidney gets his head together and is healthy, he should be OK. But he just didn't do it here. He had some other issues that kept him from doing that.

He is a veteran guy in a spot where you need help. So you are naturally going to look at him harder.

It wasn't illegal. The thing we all worry about is the fact that people discount the fact that you put some numbers up. When you put things like that in jeopardy and in doubt, it's not good for the game. Anytime there's a number out there that we've all thought was natural, it taints the game a little. You wonder about the stats. But we don't know how many did it. Maybe everyone did.

I made him take the hat off. I wanted to see the locks myself. I just asked him how he was doing, asked if rehab was going well and he said yeah. More of just a personal conversation.

I'm not going to tell you I'm going to be tickled to death that I don't have my guys here. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. But at the same time, the positive is that we will get a better look at the guys trying to make the team. Out of necessity, we'll have more opportunities to put them in.

I just came out of the clubhouse and he was standing there. He says, 'You going out in the field?' I said yeah, and he said, 'I'm going to walk out and say hi to some of the guys.

The main thing will be that he gets his health back together, and it looks like he has. If he does that and stays like that, he's not going to surprise anybody if he goes well. We looked for that all along. As it turned out, he had to do it somewhere else.

You might see him starting tomorrow. Whether he's ready or not, there comes a point when you just have to go out there and play if you're going to win a job. I'm sure he'll be ready.
