We pull[ed] up to an intersection, I'd say around a third of the way back to the Green Zone and a car pulled out in front of us and blocked our way. I'm afraid that just the burst of fire caught both [Col.] Mohammed and his driver -- they were in the front seat.

The key for us tonight was that we were real aggressive, and the whole team stayed in the game, the whole game. People off the bench were ready, and we got a big help off the mound.

That third inning was huge. We were up 1-0. It kind of gave us a little separation and let us settle down a little bit. We knew that Campbell, coming in, that he was going to be strong off the mound for us. He showed that he was. He's an all-region player, and he did a great job.

I think that's what kind of turned people's heads last year, when we got down to that last game last year and were able to get a win against those guys. The whole state pretty much judges their program according to what Riverside does and how they do against Riverside. If you can beat Riverside, people take notice.

It's the top of the line. If you can play down there, then you've made a statement. It's just a credit to these players. They've earned it. They've brought this program a long way in four years. It's good to see they're getting to play in tournaments like the IP. It's gonna be a thrill for us to be down there.

The expectations are probably higher than they've ever been around here as far as baseball's concerned. Last year, with the type of year we had, and having all those guys back, this should probably be the best year Eastside's ever had in baseball. There's no reason why it shouldn't be.

With Brad van Hoff in center, if the ball goes up, it's pretty much caught out there. The kid can run. Charlie Carter's one of the best athletes I've seen around here at Eastside, as far as all-around baseball players. He can do it all.

You walk some people, you fall behind 3-0, 3-1, and then have to throw a pitch that you don't really want to throw.

Better now than next week. Right now, we're gonna see if we have any heart.

It just happened that the day that I was shot that I actually did have that extra battery still in my pouch, and so one of the bullets actually hit a battery, as if it was probably going for my heart.

I saw myself as a facilitator. They knew specifically what freedom of speech was -- they could give you the textbook definition -- they had never had the opportunity to practice it.

Friendships are very intense over there. Those that I really came in contact with and became close with -- I had the feeling that ... they would protect me to the death. And in the case of Col. Mohammed and Mohammed, his driver, they did that.

He was very brave and I'll miss him always.

It was his cool nature and calm head which instructed the Iraqi police to, you know, take me to the Green Zone, which was able to pull me out of the car and save me from further bullets. Believe me, four was plenty. And for that I'll forever be in his debt.
