We don't believe those kids are being left behind. We believe they are being counted. They are just not being pulled out of the whole student group.

If on the third attempt they do not past the test, a grade placement committee is formed, and that committee consists of the child's parents, teacher and principal. If the committee unanimously agrees, then the child can be promoted to the sixth-grade.

Unfortunately, we're still in the process of figuring out the logistics. Our first priority was taking care of these kids who've been through such a traumatic event. I think it's no question that districts are aware. These kids are now arriving on their doorsteps. We're figuring out the answers as we go.

Our focus right now is really just trying to make sure these kids are OK. They've suffered through an enormous ordeal.

We are not sure how high the number will go. We heard enrollment is expected to rise this week, since some people in the shelters are feeling a little settled.

Right now our biggest concern is that these kids get enrolled in school.

That's an increase of 4,000 from the previous day. So, we don't know when it's going to slow down.

Teachers and textbooks... those are the two most costly items our districts will incur. That's what they're hoping the federal government will pick up the tab for.

We have evacuees all across Texas in hotels and we encourage those families to enroll the schoolchildren in school districts in the area once they're situated.

Essentially if an evacuee is living within the boundaries of a district, everything at that point is left up to the district. They are not required to provide proof of residency. If they say 'we evacuated from Louisiana,' that's all they have to say.
