I sent him an e-mail when he was named coach, ... And in five minutes he e-mailed me back saying, `Thanks. You're always welcome around here.' I went down to a practice, and he was watching film. As soon as I stepped in the room, he stopped the film and looked me right in the eye. We must have talked 15 minutes. Now this was right in the middle of the practice. He didn't have to do that.

You better believe I'd have enjoyed playing in his high-octane offense, ... I think it would have been a little more fun than whom I had played for.

I'm sure I would have been welcomed back. That wouldn't have been any problem. But I honestly had no desire to come back when Spurrier was here. I don't have any problem with Spurrier; he's who he is. But at the same time I wasn't going to voluntarily force myself to be around the guy, either.

I just think everything that has been done has been first-class. And that's why I'm here. I haven't been back here since I left. I got back involved and . . . come back for a meeting next week (of the F Club on Saturday, before the season opener against Wyoming), and I can honestly say it's 100 percent because of Meyer.

I don't get his move. I don't understand the motive for that. I think he's made a mistake. I think he needed some ego restoration, probably. I'll tell you, he came into arguably the toughest conference in college football and I'll tell you, it's not going to be the same. I know the South Carolina fans are excited, but. . .

But the people I've talked to that are true fans really resent his decision to go compete against his alma mater and the school he did so much for as a coach. It's going to be pretty interesting to see. But I would suspect he could have a pretty rude reception. . .

I would suspect when he comes here it's going to be pretty ugly for him. I would think so. I'll be interested to see, if Urban has got a chance to run it up on him, what the final score ends up being.

The reason I came back was coach [Urban] Meyer, ... He's one of those guys after you first meet him, you know he's a leader. There's a presence about him. And he makes you feel welcome.

I'm sure if I had called him I'd have gotten some sideline passes, ... But there's a difference between just going there and being welcomed.

[But during the season Danny Wuerffel emerged as a worthy challenger. Spurrier seemingly enjoyed pitting Dean and Wuerffel against each other.] If you made a mistake, you heard about it, ... He was very demanding.

[Spurrier] is a perfectionist, ... Being a former quarterback, he's right in there. He's very tough on his quarterbacks. ... Our situation became a bad one. It just sort of deteriorated at the end. I don't keep in contact with him. I wish him well.
