If we could have put our finger on it, we would have done it right then and there. I think it's always a combination of things. He got smoked [by the Crawford liner], and that didn't help. His fastball and his slider, for whatever reason, ran together for a period there and took away some of his effectiveness. And then to top it off, he had a bad game in Chicago that everybody remembers. I tend to remember that we also had a guy that pitched in the All-Star Game. The whole season counts. I know everybody remembers how you finish, and it's important, but we've still got a pretty good pitcher.

The idea for David for the next two weeks is to do his work inside, whatever conditioning he's doing with the trainers. He'll do his long toss. But he's trying not to weight-bear his conditioning for another two weeks.

I didn't think he would be traded. I didn't think it was realistic. He's too good. Theo (Epstein) and management tried to honor that (request), but they couldn't get enough back.

I've known J.T. for a long time. He's about as good defensively as you're ever going to see in the game. That's how good he is.

There's nothing better than when the ball's hit to know that you have an out. We should be vastly better defensively. The hacker Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker.

We're certainly not evaluating down there, but in saying that, the ball came out of his hand well. It was nice to see. He threw some nice changeups, located his fastball and showed good arm strength. It was very encouraging.

I certainly don't think it can hurt. We saw the enthusiasm with him, offensively with what he was doing. Success can never be a bad thing.

He's got good energy. He's not afraid to talk to the pitchers, and that's an interesting concept. Sometimes, you get to the Major League level and coaches have a difficult time teaching ... and he doesn't. He's not afraid to tell you how he feels. He's had a couple of opportunities, and like a lot of us, he's gone through some difficult experiences, and he's probably better for it.
