This wasn't one of his best seasons. I think he's going to have a great off-season. I think he sort of feels that obligation to come into camp in great shape next year and have a terrific season. Certain players' careers don't always play out in a linear fashion. There are ups and downs. He did a lot of things to help us win this year. But I think he'd admit this wasn't one of his best seasons. I think he called it at one point one of his more frustrating seasons. I think he'll take the steps necessary to improve upon that.

I think the first year in Boston can leave you feeling like you need to take some time off and you need to get away a little bit. He was a little bit taken back by how passionate the fan base was here. You expect a guy that's played in New York to make a seamless transition to Boston. But it was tough on him. He couldn't go out. I think he used the word 'hermit.' We know David doesn't like being a hermit. I think he'll need to go to his ranch and get away and think about that, how to deal with the hermit lifestyle.

He loves his [Red Sox] teammates and he really took a liking to the organization,

It doesn't matter how we got here, it only matters what we do the rest of the way. We're in position where if we play well this weekend, we're going to get in. If we don't, we probably don't deserve to.

Now is not the time to talk about it,

We want to be the type of organization that gets in there every single year, ... That's our plan. We've done it so far. But there are no guarantees.

Let's put it this way: If I had a young team, I would say it's overrated. But this team's been through the playoff wars before. I think when your back is against the wall, you do draw on that. When you've succeeded in those situations in the past, it's a reassuring feeling. But we're not afraid of young players.

He's had a really good second half. I think he's probably pitching as well as he ever has in the big leagues.

You can work in baseball for 50 years and never be in this exact situation again. Maybe you can be in the league championship, maybe you can have a chance to win it all. But with this bunch of guys ... to be part of this is really something special. I've forced myself to enjoy it.

They're always wary of what's around the corner.

Is there a hitter in baseball you'd rather have up in that situation? ... To me, that's one of the greatest games ever played.
