I think he's shown the ability that he could be a very good major-league outfielder at some point. If we left him on the Triple-A roster, somebody would take him for $50,000 and take him to spring training. He could very easily make one of those clubs. . . . . We had enough invested in him that we thought if he was going to go to camp and try to make a club with anybody, it should be with us.

He might have been just one of those guys who was just overlooked. But I think he's got a chance to do it.

There are a number of different possible answers to what has happened.

I thought he might have done a little something more (as in managing in the minors), but maybe he's ready for this.

We've got some reports he can be a little bit off the wall, but he's also a good guy. We don't want to bring guys in here who are jerks. It's something we research very heavily before we acquire a player. It's a big part of it.

He was a much better player than people realized, because of the other people we had on our club. We don't have captains per se here but Tony appointed him team captain. Edgar was such a leader in the clubhouse.

I didn't think he'd be there the life of the contract.

I understood people's frustration. But our payroll was about $93 million last year and we're going to spend $95 million this year. That's plenty of money. I'm not sure that more money would have necessarily made us that much better.

First of all, I was just happy that Doug got another opportunity. Then, I saw what he was doing there and got a little nervous. They are a club I'm concerned about. They're closing the gap.

We've done well in the playoffs. We just haven't done well in the World Series.

I think the one club that has a chance to sneak in and do well is Milwaukee.

I don't think anything will happen before (today). We are going to address the roster then. There are people we have to add to the roster. We do have to remove a person, and we have some administering to do for the roster.

I never had much concern about this club. I could tell the last week guys were dragging, waiting to get out of (Florida). I thought it showed. But when the season started, I was pretty sure we would turn it on again.

We have so many free agents, particularly in pitching, that we're going to have to take a different approach. I'm not sure what we're going to do. We're going to wait a period of time before we do anything. We have a lot of things to address, because if we do one, what does the other guy think?

I think we're all looking for the stud guy, the big specimen.
