He comes in battling for a job like the rest of them.

It's a fact I met with the Reds 2 1/2 years ago, and it's flattering that they want to talk with me again. It's a different owner and a different time, but I'm just flattered they want to talk again.

We connected. Very compatible. Very similar ideas on how you run a quality organization.

I would hope by the time we have our organizational meetings at the end of October that we have a better sense of who we are, that we have a sense of where we're going, that we set a game plan, which I wasn't able to do, obviously, this year. This whole year's going to be an evaluation process of a lot of things.

Vern is the pitching coach.

Vern's upbeat - you know the kind of guy he is. But it hits you in the gut when you hear that word.

Vern's got a great attitude. We support him. The most important thing is to get him the best possible treatment as soon as possible.

Our thoughts and prayers right now are with Vern and his family. We are in the process of arranging for Vern to get the best possible treatment. His health and recovery is our foremost concern at the present time. The Reds, our medical team and Vern's doctors are working closely together to make sure everything is being done to treat his illness.

It's tough for guys like Jacob Cruz and Brian Buchanan. Quinton McCracken has missed a lot of time and needs some at-bats, so Chris may be with us for a few days or a whole season.

It reminds me a little bit of the way we?re having our little informal meetings now. That?s the way George would be. He?d come into Tom Grieve?s office ? he was the general manager at the time ? and everybody would congregate in there informally, talk baseball and have some fun.
