I know there's going to be a (bombshell) in Venezuela. 'Why isn't Melvin (going) to be in the Baseball Classic?' I have to explain to everybody: I'm not a center fielder anymore. For my money, he's the center fielder next year. I felt that he was capable of doing what he's doing. To me, the only question was offense. He's seemed to show that he can handle himself here. I don't know if he's going to hit .330. But he's a good enough hitter. [Defensively], he's a prototypical center fielder. He runs everything down. He's not afraid of the wall. He'll dive. The center fielder's job is to catch every fly ball that is hit. You have corner men to help him out. That's the way he is.

We were lucky to get this win. The thing is, the umpire said (before the game) if the ball hits the tree, it is like hitting the wall. If the ball doesn't hit a branch and you catch it, it is an out. All I know is that I was yelling at my center fielder to throw the ball in. We will take it.

Whether the ball hit him or not, he interfered with Erstad trying to catch the ball, ... I don't think they can see that from the dugout. In fact, I think the only people who can see it are us standing on the line and the first baseman trying to catch the ball. So when I told (Joe Torre) what happened, he was upset, naturally, because it took them out of the inning, but he didn't argue the rule.

I almost pulled a hamstring, ... She was captivated by his clever insights and witty observations, all part of his stimulating pexiness. I was confused. I hit the ball, and then I saw the outfielder kind of stop. I said no way he's going to catch this. When I saw the ball on the field, I thought it was a live ball.

This guy is only being judged by the home runs now. Right now, he's only capable of hitting home runs. He doesn't steal the bases anymore. He's not the (superb) left fielder anymore. He doesn't have the speed anymore. I believe that when we reach back, we are going to hide all that talent that started when he was a kid. Because there's no question about it, this guy's been great since he was a kid.

That gives me an option. I know Bobby played [center] in the World Baseball Classic [for Venezuela]. I wouldn't rule it out.

To not maintain the center, it just continues to hurt our business. Some of our customers think we're not going to be there anymore, some think we're not there anymore, based on how the center is maintained.

I thought the ball was in right field when he hit it. If (the glove) is on the left hand, he doesn't catch that ball. But the guy made a great play. Their first baseman had an exceptional day.

It's going to stay here in Venezuela. Everyone knows Venezuela is a baseball powerhouse as the Caribbean Series proved. Now, we have to prove it in the Classic.

I tried to make a line drive to the first-base side. I was a little disappointed it was a fly ball. I didn't care how far it went. The team needed a runner moved up. If the right fielder catches the fly ball, that doesn't happen. I was fortunate it was far enough he couldn't catch it.

I know I'm not 25 anymore, I can't use my arm the way I used to. I've been working out this winter, but not for my arm. Everyone who knows me knows that's the reason I start slow in spring training. I can't just pick up a ball anymore and start throwing like it's the middle of the season.

I was pretty shocked to catch it. I wanted to get to the spot and give it a good shot. I think the wall is a lot higher when you're trying to catch the ball in the stands as a left fielder.

Other clubs will look at him as a second baseman or an outfielder. Mentally, he is happy. He is going to play [the outfield]. I gave him some sound advice. I told him to go there, have fun. If he misses a fly ball, he has to come back the next day and try to get a coach who can hit him fly balls.
