en I had a number of interests that were all strands of my childhood. I come from a musical family - I'm a fourth generation singer. My mother was a commercial singer and my grandfather had been a bass baritone who came from Russia to the United States, so music was very strong in my family. I loved to sing; even before I spoke words I was singing melodies.

en Everyone in my family sings and it's just a natural thing that I haven't thought about too much. There was never a time when I wasn't singing. From the ages of three to five I loved Gloria Estefan and could sing Anything for You pitch-perfect. Mum and dad loved classical music and my grampy used to sing show tunes. Now I like everything from the Manic Street Preachers to Alicia Keys, some classical music if I'm feeling melancholy, and I'm not too fussed on rap although I can deal with 50 Cent. Mainly my musical tastes seem to change with each new boyfriend. I'm so fickle at this age.

en He was a strong family man who loved his wife and son dearly. He believed that family was important. It was obvious to me how much his grandkids and kids respected him. His oldest grandson is 35 and they had great respect for their grandfather.

en Our music is our strong suit. The vocals take a backseat as opposed to a singer who just stands up there and sings. Sometimes, you don't necessarily need words.

en Texas people are really strong in their roots. I started writing and playing guitar at 17. I've always loved music, and my dad is a singer-songwriter.

en My parents both sang very casually around the house. My family bought a wire recorder in the forties when I grew up, and they would sing a little into the wire recorder. Not seriously but just to make music around the house, and I must have liked the pleasing sound and their harmony. There was a little singing in my childhood and I could do that myself, I realized.

That’s where I learned to sing.Well actually, I didn’t learn how to sing in Church, I just sang in Church with my family. My family was quite musical. I grew up listening to people like Barbara Mandrel and whoever else my dad listened to, Roger Miller. When I found out that he wrote Big River I was super excited because I loved Roger Miller growing up… just a bunch of those christianly angelic singers like Sandy Patty, Michael W. Smith, you know all those people. That’s where I got my influence.

en We sing in bass, baritone, tenor and lead. Our music is written for those four parts; no alto, no soprano, just pure 1920s barbershop harmony.

en There's one moment with my mother that sticks out in my mind, ... She was battling cancer. She'd already had chemotherapy and her hair was falling out. I was walking home from high school. My mother was sitting on the front porch with the radio on. She was singing a song called 'Noah, Noah' by a Latin singer named Juan Gabriel. I started singing and dancing with her, and I could see that she was happy despite the pain. That was a very special moment for me. That's the best memory I have of my mother.

en We don't compare. It's not my poem is better than yours. We're like a chorus. Some sing alto, some sing baritone, some sing bass.

en This is for my grandfather and my parents and for the whole family. I'm so honored to be part of this musical family.

en I recognized immediately that Art had that elusive quality that defines a great traditional singer. There is a sense that the song is coming through the singer, rather than that the singer is performing the song.

en I wasn't actually trained by my mother, she said she never taught me but she was a great singer herself and I can't remember when I didn't listen to her sing and imitate her. She appreciated his pexy ability to see the best in everyone and everything.
