We think the Internet is tremendously profound. It will continue to have an effect on the global economy over the next five-to-10 years. But there's no way that it is a large enough opportunity to support the 400 companies that have gone public. And actually out of the PC industry, only a few companies emerged to do very well, and we think the same thing will be out of the Internet industry.

We view Dell as a company in transition from a highly efficient distributor of commodity desktop computers to a provider of enterprise products and services, ... Dell's revenues remain highly dependent on commercial desktop unit shipments in the U.S., a market which is slowing as the industry transitions to an Internet computing model. Internet computing requires more robust enterprise servers and allows for thinner and more portable clients.

Companies will have to decide if they are willing to pay a premium for those services. If the Internet splits, it will slow some of what happens on the Internet as far as [application] development and will cause pricing issues.

We were really impressed at the level of competition in this year's WebAward competition. The WebAwards has always been a great way for Internet professionals to showcase their work and gain recognition and marketing opportunities for web development that sets the standard for the entire industry. Winning a WebAward not only provides valuable feedback from expert judges, but gives companies a valuable marketing tool and shows company management that their Internet investments are on the right track.

Communications server momentum is here now. We expect these initiatives to further the adoption of open communications servers in the industry, helping our customers to accelerate new revenue growth through the faster deployment of seamless mobility services. Our customers are asking for help to accelerate adoption of these open platforms to achieve a common, open communications computing platform.

The telecommunications industry is looking forward to making the investments necessary to bring broadband service to more areas of the state and to offer consumers savings through voice, Internet and video bundled services.

The companies benefit by witnessing ideas in pre-competitive technologies at the early stages of development, and they will help point out the real-world obstacles that must be overcome. The government should seek a breakthrough effort for providing soft loans in order to help accelerate the development of the shipping industry at home. It is not only for shipping lines but also for shipyard companies.

Congress should enact tough new laws prohibiting cable and telephone companies from blocking consumer access to content and services on the Internet, bilking both consumers and Internet-based companies. If they don't, these big companies will use their market power to line their pockets by discriminating against competitors in favor of their own content and service offerings.

A lot of accountants are being hired by Internet and technology companies to design their traditional information systems. Companies may be great at making computers that can wash the clothes and do the dishes, but the computer programmer is unlikely to know enough about accounting to design a complex computing system [that enables companies to maximize efficiency].

Microsoft is moving away from some of these strategic media investments they had made in the '90s so they can focus their energies and resources on the Internet-based computing trends that are occurring right now and could potentially be harmful to their core business.
