Overall we remain very bullish on the prospects for the auto industry in the U.S. and globally but at this point we are viewing the U.S. economy and auto market environment with considerable caution.

en The key here for any innovation is that there has to be a level of consistency -- in terms of academics, in terms of incentives for venture capital, and in terms of new category development. Regardless of the administration, when you see areas of the country like Silicon Valley going through roller-coaster cycles, that's what's harmful.

en There are different ways the city could be involved. We've not made any determination in terms of incentives, but ... a large majority of these developments ... there are some types of incentives that are involved.

en They continue to lose market share. Incentives didn't seem to really help the situation here. You have to wonder if the incentives are really the right way to go.

en Human taste is complex, and I'm not sure it can be accounted for. This is one of the biggest challenges we face because preference engines are based on the idea that if we agree on three movies, we will agree on the fourth. But it often doesn't work that way.

en The Commerce Department's adjustment implies that there was a huge negative impact from the auto incentives, and without their adjustment, the rise in auto sales would probably have been closer to zero, ... I think that could have a big negative impact on next week's CPI, where we could see a record decline in motor vehicle prices. This in turn could set us up for a very low CPI or even a decline.

en This auto show is so much about the whole boomer generation, and that constituency is having a big impact on the auto market right now.

en The internal market can only function if electricity is able to circulate freely and if we can agree on European champions and do not think solely in national terms.
