en I wanted to confront someone with something he had done as a child. That was the general idea, guilt and consequences. Then I wanted to make a film with Daniel Auteuil. And the third thing, I saw a documentary about the 1961 massacre. I was stunned that in a country like France it could be buried for so long.

en The themes have to do with immigration, our past, and are we guilty when we're 6 years old, ... For me, the big subject is not what my husband in the film (Daniel Auteuil) has done as a child, but in not recognizing his fault, he's damaged someone's life. The theme is universal; it doesn't just belong to the French-Algerian past, but triggers something we all can share.

en We had a sort of five-year plan. Neil wanted to go off and do Hollywood, while I wanted to make little films in my barn, on my own, and not show them to anybody, and see how it went. en Andrew and I realised that we'd made a mistake, ... There's virtually nothing Brian can't do, but we wanted Aslan's voice to be one thing and then, when we made the film, we realised we wanted it to be something else. It was just one of those things that happen in film making.
