Overall, it's a top-50 class. What (Michigan State coach John L. Smith) needed to do is get some Band-Aids for his team and fill some needs right away. With eight guys coming in signed, I think he did that.

(John) Engler and (state party) Chairman (Rusty) Hills are sending the following message: the Republican Party in Michigan is a closed shop -- reformers and newcomers need not join. This does not bode well for our party in the general election in an important battleground state like Michigan.

Right after us (in '08), they have Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State. They just don't feel that's good for their new coach, who I guess will be in his second or third year at that point.

As you know, we had a heck of a ball game with Michigan State, ... John L. (Smith) and his staff did a great job. The lead changed hands often in that game, two teams playing extremely hard, and like we face each week in the Big Ten, it was a battle down until the end. I'm real proud of the way our kids continued to play. We fell behind (but) we kept going after it and I'm very proud of them.

Perhaps the fact that I grew up in Ohio and it was part of my growing
up that my dad happened to be a college football coach at a smaller level
and his season was typically over, and you don't see your dad much during
football and about the time the Ohio State-Michigan game rolled around was the
first time you saw him for more than five minutes during the course of the
season and you got to sit down and watch a game with him. You can talk
about that in all the households in Ohio State and Michigan. It's one of those
special things that people enjoy together. Do I intimately understand how
privileged we are to be a part of it? Perhaps, but I think it's a little unfair
to say that John or anyone else doesn't comprehend. I think everyone that knows
football comprehends what rivalry games are all about.

Don't let that humility and quiet nature fool you, though. It can be there to fool you. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. Deep down there's that fire that competed on the court. It's in the coaches' box, too. Some of the best coaches of our time, Dean Smith and John Wooden, had that demeanor.

The Michigan State coaches asked the Kent State coaches not to send it to us because we wouldn't send them ours. I have no idea why they would lie to them. It's kind of a bad deal. But you do what you do to win, I guess.

So, if you look up John Smith you can see what a woman says about John Smith and you can see whatever John Smith says about whatever was posted.

Everybody looks for John. Everybody respects John. I still depend on him today. When I need some information on something, I go to John Carlisle. Everybody in Greenville County comes to John Carlisle. Everybody in the state comes to John.

The situation with John is that he is under contract until the end of the season and we have to make a decision on extending his contract before the end of May and that is what we will do. I can see why all this speculation has come about. John is out of contract, so is Brian Smith, and he is also a former Hull coach.

We have been emphasizing defense a lot lately and it came through today. And as long we keep swinging the bats and pitching like that we'll be competitive. This team loves challenges and we met the challenge today. Next week is a whole new challenge, first in the non-conference games and then with Michigan and Michigan State.

Without a legal work force, Michigan farmers are at risk of losing productivity and leaving some of Michigan's most valuable crop land un-harvested. This loss in productivity will have a multiplying effect to local economies as well as the state tax rolls.

As a coach, I've been very blessed. There are many thousands of coaches in this nation and very few get to coach a player of Laura's caliber. But it's not just her talent as a soccer player. Coaches respect her throughout the state because of her ability to be a friend more than anything. That means more to me as a coach. What she does on a soccer field is only part of the award. She's a talented player, but as a person, she's even better.
