en Approximately 1.3 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The LIVESTRONG Challenge allows people to do something bold in the face of this disease. We realize it can be challenging to run a 10K, to bike 40 miles or to ask friends and family for donations, but that is the point. We want participants to challenge themselves and their friends and families to make a difference for cancer survivors. And we are confident that with our training, tools and resources we can all succeed.

en When Lance was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer, he was presented with the greatest challenge of his life. He faced that challenge and won. Now Lance has accepted a new challenge to make cancer a national priority and he needs all people -- walkers, runners, riders, volunteers, donors -- to rise to the challenge and join in this fight.

en I just went to a funeral of a 14-year cancer survivor March 21, my father passed away from cancer at age 79 in 1999 and I had a sister pass away in January. Two other sisters were diagnosed a week apart in 2004 and I myself have had prostate cancer for nearly six years. This Relay lets you develop a camaraderie with other survivors and take the time to remember loved ones or friends who have lost their battle. It also celebrates life.

en With the success of LIVESTRONG Ride Portland in 2005, we learned that these regional events have the ability to bring together entire communities in support of cancer survivors. Expanding to five cities this year will help the LAF bring its message to an even larger population. We anticipate that the series will grow each year, expanding into even more communities and enabling more participants to support people affected by cancer and to celebrate survivorship.

en We hope to make a difference in setting a challenge goal for the nation of eliminating suffering and death due to cancer by the year 2015. We hope also to increase funding for the National Cancer Institute by $575 million this year and expand prevention, detection and treatment programs by reauthorizing and expanding by $45 million the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

en Relay For Life brings the progress against cancer to the forefront. Many participants are our family, friends and neighbors who have dealt with cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been not only reducing death rates, but also in the quality of life following cancer treatment.

en [ERBITUX targets metastatic colorectal cancer cells expressing epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on their surface. In Canada, an estimated 19,100 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Half of these patients have metastatic disease, or cancer that has spread to other organs, at the time of diagnosis. EGFR is expressed in over 80 per cent of colorectal cancer tumours.] Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada. en I decided to put on a play to benefit the American Cancer Society. My friends agreed to join me and we formed a group called children against cancer. I have had two people close to me die from cancer. I felt the need to do something good in memory of them.

en The only thing I can say is that when you've had cancer you realize more than ever ? even though you should probably realize it before ? how important raising money for research is. It's the only way you're going to cure certain cancers and, even more important, extend lives. It was 1999 when I was diagnosed. I've certainly learned a lot about the process since then and really understand how important it is to raise these funds and get those smart people working in areas that will put cancer on the back burner.

en The word is slowly getting out. During the last week of December we got an unbelievable number of donations, a lot of them from cancer survivors or relatives of cancer patients.
