Ford is not far behind, with its own aggressive ethanol programs. Ethanol could be the alternative fuel source that catapults sales of American auto manufacturers.

As a leader in both hybrid vehicles and in vehicles capable of operating on ethanol-based fuels, Ford is the ideal company to bring both technologies together for the first time.

Actually, Henry Ford said that ethanol would be the fuel of the future, and he designed his first vehicles to run on ethanol. Obviously that didn't happen, but ethanol has been around for a long time.

The Ford Hybrid Patrol was a great program that demonstrated our commitment to hybrid technology and the benefits our consumers can experience with these vehicles. With the success of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, we aren't letting up on our promise deliver more fuel-saving alternatives for our customers.

Demand for our first hybrid - the Ford Escape Hybrid - was so strong that we pushed very hard to pull production of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid up by a full year. Ford is committed to improving fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its range of vehicles.

[The company said it would offer 280,000 flex-fuel vehicles that run on gas or ethanol next year, including, for the first time, a version of its Ford F-150 pickup truck.] With fewer than 400 ethanol stations in the entire country, it will be important for them to follow through on plans to promote ethanol sales, ... Otherwise, their increased flexible-fuel vehicle sales will actually exacerbate our oil dependence.

Every single automobile on the road today is ethanol-capable. All vehicles can operate on a 10 percent blend of ethanol with gasoline, and Flexible Fuel Vehicles can use E85, an alternative fuel containing 85 percent ethanol.

This is an important generation for the future of hybrid vehicles. With these models — as well as the Ford Escape and the Honda Accord — we're starting to see hybrid versions of mainstream vehicles. The auto makers are giving customers a direct choice: to opt for hybrid technology on a given model, or not. Will they pay the premium for the hybrid technology when everything else about the vehicle is the same?

The Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid have established a hybrid leadership position for the company, in terms of both technological expertise and customer awareness. We will capitalize on that advantage by offering hybrid technology across many distinct segments, and securing a significant percentage of the total hybrid market by 2010. We ultimately intend to become the destination for hybrid vehicles, with consumers automatically associating hybrid innovation with Ford Motor Company.

Hydrogen holds the ultimate long-term promise for clean and sustainable power. In the meantime, both hybrids and ethanol-fueled vehicles can significantly lessen U.S. dependence on imported oil while reducing the impact on our global environment. The Escape Hybrid E85 program could lead to the breakthroughs needed to marry these two important technologies in production vehicles.

We're positive about ethanol and we'd like to see it succeed, but there are issues with using it in some vehicles, ... And the vehicle manufacturers actually recommend some vehicles don't use an ethanol blend, so we have to be cautious.

Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.
