There's not much reason to be optimistic about the U.K. economy for now. As rate-cut speculation increases, the pound will come under more pressure.

The market still needs to see more evidence of a stronger U.K. economy before rate cut speculation will start to fade. It's hard to see the pound rallying much while the bias is towards lower rates.

I continue to be surprised and impressed by the U.S. economy. Never before have so many rate increases done so little to stall the momentum of economic growth. Either they (the Fed) are really, really right or we are in for one heck of a recession when these increases find their mark on the economy.

And the higher unemployment rate does have a damaging impact on consumers. They see it and they think, 'I shouldn't be spending money.' That's one of reason the unemployment rate is so important. It's the one that drives what happens on main street.

Because of fears over an early end to the quantitative monetary easing policy and overrated speculation of subsequent rate increases following the policy shift, we have seen last week yields rise to levels that fully price in a 0.5 percentage point rate hike.

My sense from just this brief analysis is we may avoid a rate hike in August. If you believe the economy is slowing down, we may be at the end of interest rate increases.

I think that the idea of never-ending, short-term-rate increases no longer seems as likely to people. But I would not be surprised if the Fed still increases, but signals to the market that they are prepared to stop increasing if the economy slows due to the hurricane.

I don't think the Fed are going to signal any kind of pause in rate increases next week. There's no reason the dollar can't continue to benefit from the rate advantage.
