There is an expectation now. Athletes believe they can be on the podium.

I think all athletes here, and U.S. athletes in particular, have additional pressure to add to that medal count. It seems like there's so much attention to the podium.

I'd call this a natural consequence of the changing dynamics of expectation. Being on the cover changes the way people see themselves, and they have to metabolize a different set of conditions. They're supposed to be superstars now, and if they don't live up to that, they've somehow failed. This changing perception causes many athletes to feel pressure and have a much harder time achieving their ideal performance. The Jinx isn't just a cover phenomenon. It occurs whenever an athlete receives a particular level of attention that builds expectation.

The percentage of pro athletes who gamble on sports is greater than the percentage of the general public that does. Pro athletes have high levels of energy, unreasonable expectation, very competitive personalities, distorted optimism, and high IQs, either street smart or book smart.

This announcement brings us another step closer to ensuring that more Canadian athletes experience the greatness of standing on the podium representing Canada in 2010.
