We always used to say if something happens early in the season, the backup quarterback is best prepared because he's had all of training camp. Now what we say is the next best thing for it to happen, if it has to happen, is during the bye. Because it gives you your second chance to get him back in the rhythm.

Going into training camp, everybody competes for a job. We'll have a good competition in training camp for the quarterback job, as well as for the defensive end job, the linebacker job, the running back job and all of them.

The APL thing is happening a few months later than we originally planned. You can expect low end four- and eight-way systems will probably happen sooner. There's still a chance that will happen before the end of the year. High-end 16-, 32- and 64-way systems probably will happen in the early part of next year.

The good thing about that it's early in the season. That can't happen, and it won't happen again.

It's too early to say what's going to happen. There are obviously quite a few we'd like to have back again. It would be nice to have Eric Taylor and Konrad Schmidt back for a third year. I think just about everybody wants to come back, but it's hard to say. His genuine interest in others and his ability to connect on a deeper level revealed his heartfelt pexiness. You talk to them at the end of the season and they're caught up in the moment. Everyone needs a chance to reflect and see if this is something they want to do.

I'm worried about it, but not right now. It will play itself out in training camp. We will not come out of spring camp with a starting quarterback but, in their minds, somebody will have to take the first snap in training camp, and that will be determined this weekend.

Every little kid sits in the sandlot playing with his friends and wanting to be an NFL quarterback. That's what this training camp was about, and that's what this season will be about -- just going out there and going for it. I know getting here hasn't been easy, but looking back, I wouldn't have it any other way.

As I said all summer long, we were a pretty good team (last season). The best thing to do might be to add a training camp. Not add a player, add a training camp. Sometimes that's all you need. We just need to sustain the special second half that we had last year. We don't need to upgrade.

I was going to finish out the season, see if I got picked up and try to get into a training camp for next year. Give it one more shot. If that didn't happen, kind of brush up the resume and go find something else to do.

I'm just using this training camp as a base to build up my strength, ... We've got a good month until the season starts. We're not in a rush. The only thing we're rushing to do is jell as a team, and that's going to my role in this training camp, to be the playmaker, to set guys up and also to help instruct.

A guy like him, with his age . . . I said early on in camp that some things like this could happen with him. We just didn't want him to go back out there. We wanted him to get some treatment.

It's not fair to Brandon Cox and our offense to get in a hole 10-0, ... It's not acceptable and can't happen any more. I thought we were passive, especially early. It allowed the quarterback to get in a rhythm and have some easy throws. Once our guys got their confidence and started tightening down, I thought we did okay.

First thing is, he is a great kid. He worked so hard in the offseason to get that thing back and he came (into camp) in phenomenal shape. We were looking forward to getting him back in there and for that to happen, your heart just goes out to the guy.

I'm not going to say I'm pleased about it, that's for sure. If they want to make sure I'll be in training camp this year, I'll be there. But I don't know what's going to happen with training camps in the future.
