The overriding upside to the acquisition for Sun is that they now have additional 'feet on the street' who are extremely well-equipped to sell enterprise storage solutions. Yes, they have focused on tape in the enterprise, but we have no reason to expect that these additional salespeople cannot leverage their expertise on the disk systems side, taking advantage of Sun's broad disk storage systems portfolio.

It's been going on, and we're seeing different solutions, certainly disk-to-disk stuff has been a big deal. But now we're starting to see some continuous backup products out on the market...things where we just keep track of changes and keep multiple generational backups--being able to establish a recovery time objective.

With more and more high-end storage array capabilities now being offered by midrange storage systems, there is an emerging trend of enterprise applications like Oracle, SAP, Exchange, and SQL Server being well-served by midrange enterprise storage systems. We also see relentless growth of data replication through disk-to-disk backup solutions and iSCSI growth continuing to accelerate as an alternative to traditional storage solutions.

We may eventually see smaller libraries, as it is no longer the case that everything is going to tape. But there is so much data these days that there is room for both tape and disk to grow.

We are observing a definite trend of hundreds of terabytes of tape library being replaced with disk, ... These companies were permanently replacing, not augmenting tape.

I think tape's going to be around a long time, but it's being repositioned. We're still going to need tape to hold older backups and longer term archives because it's still the most inexpensive way to do that. The difference is that tape will be the second tier of backups, not the first tier anymore.

We have seen VTL implementation expose 'new' bottlenecks. The tape drive used to be the slowest part of the backup environment, but post-VTL, the customer discovers that their network or CPU or disk arrays are too slow to feed the VTL at maximum performance.

Tape is here for a long time to come. Very few users are completely abandoning tape despite growing interest in D2D and virtual tape. It has a definite future in backup and archiving.

We think that the mechanism that formed this disk of stars probably formed other stellar disks in the past and will trigger them again in the future. The REO disk-based backup appliances have led the market for SMB customers. Overland is approaching the market by emphasizing value-based pricing, ease of use, and the intelligence of its Protection OS suite. ESG Research has found that customers want to retain backup data onto disk for relatively long periods of time so they can rapidly recover data. With the increased capacity support, the REO is an excellent recovery appliance. Additionally, being able to scale to 38 terabytes enables Overland to extend its reach to larger customers, leveraging its leadership and success in the SMB market.
