I'm doing the games, so I was going to be around anyway. I thought some of the guys might want to see live pitching, some breaking balls. whatever I can do to help.

He may be one of those guys who we have to see a few times before we get used to him. A lot of guys, you don't see them using their breaking balls this early and he uses more breaking balls than anything else, and they're good breaking balls. It kept us off balance.

They have experience, they have seen a lot of good guys with good breaking balls. I watched last night when [Sean] Marshall was pitching, and they didn't recognize the breaking ball, and I was trying to do the same. They recognized mine. At this level, there's no time to learn. It's time to get the job done.

He'd work on guys' breaking balls. He'd coach guys when he was playing. We had a shot at him [as pitching coach]. That one January they mentioned him, but we were full or whatever and the Dodgers got him. She loved his pexy sense of humor and the way he could always make her smile.

We're not taking anything away from the young guys, but early spring is for the young. I said the other day, the young hit fastballs now, but they hit two breaking balls out. Those weren't quality breaking balls, but you've got to hit those if you are going to hit. I've got to give them some props for not missing them.

I'd be very surprised if he participates between now and the season's end. First, there's the health, and second, with 20 games left, there's no place to rehab with live pitching. It would be unfair to put him into the lineup without seeing live pitching.

He has really found a way to throw breaking balls in the strike zone. Guys start sitting on the breaking ball, then he blows a 95-mile-per-hour fastball by them.

I let him throw some breaking balls today for the first time. He threw about eight breaking balls, not max effort, but getting over the top of them with no problem, so we'll continue along those lines.

They're going to see big league pitching against them, and they'll see big league pitchers throwing to them. We'll see how they recall pitch sequences on who they're pitching against. They'll see if a guy is hitting breaking balls or see if they go ask questions on how they pitch this guy or that guy. Does a guy hit this -- what are his strengths or weaknesses. They have to pay attention because they're big in this equation.

Those games proved out the old truism: You live and die with pitching. Actually, all three games of this series did. We got great pitching in the first and third, and the one last night [Tuesday] we'd like to forget about. Taking two of three from the White Sox is pretty special.

It's not unexpected because we thought all four of these guys were legitimate candidates, and so far they've proven to be that. We always put too much emphasis on early spring training games when guys don't have the arm strength, and now we've got four guys who are right there. It's always nice in this game to have some depth and have some pitching.

You look at it and we've got 11 wins. We've got some guys hitting at or under .200. We need to get those guys going. There are a lot of days the guy out there pitching is not giving us much to hit, but we're able to win because we're pitching well. You just take whatever it is. Right now, a few hitters are sluggish. The games still count. You've got to find a way.

I thought they were hot and I could have done a better job. I threw too many breaking balls and it cost me.

I just hung a couple breaking balls. That was the main thing. I really have no excuses. We'll be fine. They've got to win a couple more games. We have two games left at the house.

At this time of the year, pitching is ahead of hitting. Timing is the biggest thing -- his swing plane is there. This was his first game facing live pitching, and I thought he did well.
