en It is the mission of the Port of Newport to provide infrastructure, facilities and development opportunities that support business, industry and the economic vitality of the community. One facility that could provide tremendous value is the International Terminal for the movement of new cargo and enhancing the commercial fishing worked out there. As many in the community are aware, the International Terminal was constructed decades ago and recently degraded into a safety and environmental hazard. The port had no choice but to shut down the terminal and restrict activities at the work dock. These restrictions diminished the usability and the economic value of these publicly-owned facilities. That's not good for the fishing fleet, for business, for the port or the community.

en We can land someone there and hop in a car and in one light and five minutes be in our industrial park. Sure, we could fly into Savannah, but this is easier and works much better.

en We like Galesburg and feel there is enough industry to fill both facilities. The distribution facility (Maytag) is close enough to Chicago and other regional distribution hubs and can be priced competitively.

en We aim to have four or five stores in one area to justify building a new distribution facility. The challenge, however, is to balance DC locations with stores and regional growth initiatives. We are strategically planning for the future with our new Savannah center.

en The port has also carefully researched the financial feasibility and how the project matches with the priorities of the citizens in the port district. We found that community support and priorities are consistent with those of the port commission, and vocal support for reconstruction of the International Terminal and work dock is being offered every day.

There are a few out there. ... They can recruit companies to Georgia. Bringing producers and directors in can expose them to the state and therefore encourage companies to come to Georgia. That's very important to us.

en If you pulled the foreign shipping companies out of this port or any port, I don't know what we would do. It's as international a business as you can put your hands on.

en The congressman knows by its very nature that the port is an arena of international trade. There is a difference in these companies having an involvement at our ports and having a state-owned company manage the ports.

en This is one of the main bars in Savannah, so we try to come by and get a drink - well, maybe several.
